Trace the Clue of Architecture on both banks of the Chao Phraya River

Trace the Clue of Architecture on both banks of the Chao Phraya River

Chao Phraya River is a significant river of Thailand. It has its origin from the north by the
tributaries namely Ping, Wang, Yom and Nan flowing together and meeting at Pak Nam Pho District, Nakhonsawan Province and transforming into a big river running southwards through the following province: Uthaithani, Chainat, Singburi, Angthong, Ayudhaya, Pathumthani, Bangkok before exiting to the sea via Paknam or mouth of the river at Samutprakarn. Paknam area used to be the location of Chao Phraya District before. Therefore, the name of this river has derived from the name of the district that is Chao Phraya River.

There have been many significant events in the Thai history occurring along both banks of the river where it has served as the location of already 3 capitals viz. Ayudhaya, Thonburi and Bangkok. Many events and stories had already faded and washed away with the water of this river. However, there has been a linkage to the stories in the past worthy of recall regarding the progress, belief, faith, love, distress which was transformed into story via architecture work in variety forms all along the both sides of this historic river.

Northeast Rockets Festivals

Northeast Rockets Festivals

Rockets soar to encourage rain in the Northeast, devout Buddhists climb a mountain in the North, kayaks race to qualify for the Olympics, just west of Bangkok, while country music lovers meet in the far western province of Kanchanaburi to fine tune their thoughts on the environment.
These are just a few of the highlights on offer around Thailand in May.
Residents of Thailand’s largest region, the Northeast or I-san, make merry in the month of May, demonstrating how the art of building homemade powerful missiles has passed down through the centuries.
If they need an excuse to organise a party and indulge in their favourite pastime of stage comedy and folk musicals, then the onset of the rainy season provides it.
Yasothon is home of the most famous rocket festival known as Bun Bang Fai early in the month, but for festival lovers who might have missed that opportunity to mingle and experience a distinctive I-san tradition, there is still time to catch the spectacle at Udon Thani and Khon Kaen, two well known town in upper I-san.
Following the popular format seen in most town that celebrate the start of the rice planting season by firing salvos of rockets, both towns will kick off their festivals with street parades that show off the rockets and the local beauty queens.
Udon Thani Rocket Festival runs from 17 to 21 May, in Baan That district, offering three days of merry making leading off with a beauty contest and parade, while rockets of various sizes, from super missiles capable of an amazing lift off to small baby versions, are ignited on 20 and 21 May.
In a similar fashion, the Khon Kaen Rocket Festival runs from 24 to 25 May, in Ka Nual district, with fun-filled hours of celebration and a rocket parade to show off the designs and technical prowess that can send these bamboo or plastic pipe rockets to heights of 1 kilometre or more. The actual rocket launches take place on the second day.

The Joyous Time in Thailand

The Joyous Time in Thailand

Story by Kullwadee Sumarlnop

It’s New Year again, the last and perhaps the most joyous time of the year. For many people, December seems to be the month you are most often preoccupied with something else but work. When the date on calendar changes to the first of December, that’s the day you start thinking about your holidays.

In this land of smiles, folks are getting ready to enjoy this year-end long holiday. Like the other two New Year occasions in Thailand – that is, Songkran, the Thai traditional New Year in mid April when people get splashed of water, and the Chinese New Year approximately in early February for Chinese descendants, -- Thai people will take this opportunity to return to their hometowns, spending the valuable time with their loved ones. It is the same tradition many westerners do during Christmas. However, in this part of the world, it is done in the oriental manner.

In a rural area, locals gather together to celebrate by feasting on food, drinking and enjoying folk plays and other fun activities. Some folks might hang out drinking homemade whisky from dusk to dawn. In the mean time, in a more traditional way, elder people will prepare themselves to wake up early to welcome the first day of the brand new year, hoping that it will make a smooth run for the whole year. So they, along with their descendants, will rise before the crack of dawn to prepare tasty foods, which will be offered to monks to mark the auspicious year. After that, they will head to temples near their houses to attend the morning service of monks preaching the sermon and giving blessing.

Back into some crowded cosmopolitans, count down celebrators are predictably going to have fun to their fullest! Certainly, in a never sleeping metropolis like Bangkok, people both Thais and foreigners will flock at landmarks of the city on New Year eve. The Tourism Authority of Thailand organizes the walking streets in front of Central World Plaza all the way through Silom Road and up to Siam Square – another event will be held the platform at Sanam Luang near the Grand Palace.

Besides the regular countdown festivities in major attraction sites like Chiang Mai, Phuket or Samui, the Sunrise Delight Festival at the Mekong River’s border provinces is no less interesting! The aforementioned event will be held in the northeastern provinces of Ubon Ratchathani, Amnajcharoen and other provinces along Mekong River. After all, watching the golden glimmer of the bronze sunlight coming up from the horizon of the ancient river might simply be the most joyous activity.

Shopping in Thailand

Shopping in Thailand

Story by Cameron Cooper

All the Stuff That's Fit to Sell Among its countless other joys and wonders, Thailand is a great place to shop -- particularly in Bangkok where the variety of retail outlets and goods is staggering. Often you'll find some good quality products on sale in department stores for half as much as at home. Likewise, there are bargains in more down-to-earth places -- open market stalls.

At the corner of First and Third: From Handicrafts to Fine Watches With Thailand's rapid development over the last 25 years or so, (and endured the socio-economic growing pains that accompany such an explosion) an unusual set of circumstances have emerged. While Bangkok is modern with large factories, tall buildings and an extensive freeway system, much of the countryside looks the same as it has for the last 60 years or so. There are wooden houses, people cooking rice over clay charcoal braziers and harvesting rice by hand.

This polarized economy gives rise to diverse tastes and capabilities. Those at the top of the chain seek out luxury cars, designer clothes and watches, and fine foods, giving rise to countless shops that offer these. As well is a huge number of lower end income people who produce traditional handicrafts in their villages. The government has even launched an economic assistance program to encourage and develop these cottage industries and for the people of Thailand to get back to their cultural roots and purchase these items. This all means the range of goods on sale in Thailand is huge.

The Same All Over Thailand

The entrepreneurial spirit looms large in Thailand. As tourism has grown, vendors all over the country have taken note of what buyers like. Say the necklace you bought from a northern hill tribe village in Chiang Mai might find their way to the souvenir shops in the southern island of Phuket. This is convenient for the visitor who only visits one region of the country. It also means there has been a bit of homogenisation, and in the end, you have craftspeople all over the country copying each others' designs. Don't be surprised to find that what you are buying may not be indigenous to the region.

Bargaining

Bargaining spread eastward from the Middle East centuries ago, so the theory goes. It persists in Thailand in open market places, but unlike in India or the Middle East, the prices start lower and discount less. Unless they've got you pegged for a real greenhorn, most vendors will quote a price about 40% or so higher than what they are willing to settle for.

The Method:

If you see something you like, ask how much (all vendors know this much English). They will usually produce a calculator and punch in the amount they want (feel free to use the calculator to convert into your own currency if you get confused). Hit clear, punch in your counter offer and hand it back. This goes on for a bit until you either reach a mutually agreeable price or a stalemate. Feel free to walk away at any time. Sometimes this gets you a last lower price, sometimes not, but don't feel you are obgligated to buy just because you started the process. Decide what the item is worth to you and if you can get it at that price, then great. If not, say goodbye and try elsewhere. You might find later that you didn't really have anywhere in your house to put that wooden elephant anyway.

Important Note: This is not a time for hostility. Sometimes in the course of bargaining, some people get carried away and get a wee bit aggressive with the vendor, which makes them feel like the customer is accusing them of cheating them. This will not bring a lower price or make for a pleasant experience. The best way to get what you want is to smile and make a game of it you're in holiday and this is part of the fun you don't get to experience in the West. In fact, if you really want to have a good time, hand back the calculator with a lower offer than your last one, with a big smile on your face. This usually engenders a spirit of goodwill and playfulness and can go a long way to lowering the price nothing like laughter to make new friends.

Quality:

Because Thailand is such a vibrant free market, and regulatory bodies can't really keep up, you do have to keep your eyes open concerning quality. Many street vendors sell 'knock-off' goods -- fake rolexes, designer clothes copies, that sort of thing.

Now, you should be aware that this practice is illegal and there have been ongoing clampdowns in several areas. Whether you choose to buy these products or not, be aware that they are (with the possible exception of T-shirts) of substandard quality. Bit pretentious really, buying a fake Rolex that in the end fools nobody. You have to square it with your own conscience (and your own taste).

If you do choose to break the law and buy knockoffs (and the quality varies enormously), examine the items very closely. Don't be in a hurry and don't be pressured. If the vendor's goods are better quality than average (as they will often claim), they will want you to make a thorough examination. And did we mention that it is illegalω

Tailors:

These shops are in a category by themselves. It is impossible to walk down a major street in Bangkok without passing several tailor shops, with a man out front (usually of Indian origins) trying to persuade you that you need two or three new suits.

Some of the prices seem too good to be true, and they are, in a way. For one thing, the low prices you see on the board outside are usually for a quality of material that you simply wouldn't be caught dead wearing. Also, the man measuring you is not actually a tailor, he is a broker the orders are filled by "sweat shops" nearby, so the quality is not as personalised as you may have been led to believe. So is it worth buying a suite It can be, but you have to keep your eyes open.

Here are a few tips:

  • Give the polyester a miss and go for higher quality material from the outset. Try the flame test on a small sample of the material; if it's 100% wool or cotton, it will burn, not melt. If it melts, it's either synthetic or a synthetic blend.
  • Once you have chosen your material, insist on taking a small sample with you so that when you return you can check to see they haven't substituted a cheaper fabric.
  • Don't go for the 24-hour turnaround. Give yourself and the tailor plenty of time. Come back for a second fitting to make fine adjustments in your suit.
  • Put down as small a deposit as you can bargain so there is a good incentive for the tailor to make you happy before receiving full payment.
  • When you do collect your clothes, examine the jacket closely - these are the hardest items to make so that they hang nicely (trousers are easy). If it doesn't make you look good, politely but firmly insist on further alterations.

Bangkok:

Bangkok offers the widest range of shopping options in the country, from market stalls to air-conditioned mega-malls as big as the ones at home.

Malls:

Many people are surprised at the sheer scope of malls in Bangkok, but in their current form they have been here for decades and are a popular place for Thais to spend their weekends -- you'll see whole families browsing around in air-con comfort. Some of them even have amusement parks or zoos to add to the shopping experience.

You can find pretty much anything you'll find at malls back home, and in many cases, the prices will be lower. Most have a main large store with other shops as part of a shopping complex. All accept major credit cards. Opening hours are usually until 9pm on weekdays and 10pm on weekends, including Sundays. There is usually a fully-fledged mall within a few minute's walk of any major hotel. In fact, you can pick just about any spot in the city of Bangkok.

One thing to note is that you are serviced a bit differently from the west. When you look at an item, a salesperson will appear out of nowhere and begin following you around. This is normal in Thailand -- just like the people hover around putting ice into your drink at Thai restaurants, they are there to assist you. Try not to be annoyed and just ignore the person until you want something.

When you do choose a purchase, you usually don't take it to a counter yourself, but hand it with the charge card or cash to the person who has been trailing you for the last half hour. You can either follow them to the counter, or stay where you are -- they always come back with the right change and your neatly bagged item.

A couple of noteworthy malls near the Siam Skytrain Stop:

Mah Boon Khrong

Also known as MBK, this massive shopping complex consists of the Tokyu department store and more than 1,000 specialised shops -- most of them owner operated -- with stuff ranging from mobile phones, electronic gadgetry, local designer clothing, endless quality knockoffs, old and new camera gear (the best place in the city to get your cameras repaired or to pick up rare equipment) and countless other consumer delights. The complex also houses movie theatres, a bowling alley, and as with most of Bangkok loads of places to eat. At the smaller stalls, be prepared to bargain.

Siam Square

This is Bangkok's pre-mall shopping haven and nearly forty years on, remains popular, especially among young and trendy Thai teens. It is outdoors, a sort of shopping village, consisting of about a dozen narrow streets (some of them pedestrianised) and lined with small shops and restaurants. Many of these are name-brand boutiques (usually with better prices than you would pay at home) and independent clothing and curio designers. This is probably the trendiest spot in town to shop if you want to pick up cutting-edge stuff from America, Europe and Japan.

It is a popular hangout for Thai teens. In any case, it is a great place for a bit of people watching. The place also has loads of ice creams parlours, fast food, Thai treats, a Hard Rock Cafe and three old-style movie theatres -- much more pleasant and grand than modern ciniplexes. A good way to satisfy your consumer desires and take in a little modern-day Thai culture.

Siam Center and Siam Discovery

Across the road from Siam Square, and in some ways an extension of it, this air-conditioned mall has scores of shops in the upper end fashion, including clothes and other trendy youth pursuits like rollerblading and other sporting shops. Alongside this are electronics shops, (genuine) watches, sunglasses, furniture, music shops, and most other things you'd expect to find -- most of it top drawer stuff. Be sure to cross the pedestrian bridge to the attached Siam Discovery Center, a six floor building with a different shopping theme on each floor plus plenty of western and Thai restaurants.

Siam Paragon

Occupying more than 20 acres of land, Siam Paragon is one of the biggest and most elegant shopping centers in Asia. Dubbed as "the Pride of Bangkok", it is the largest upscale shopping mall in Thailand. Historically, the shopping mall is located on the former site of the Siam Intercontinental Hotel whose lease ended in 2002. Open in late 2005, it features a vast range of retail stores, restaurants, movie theaters, luxury car showrooms, an opera house, a supermarket and an aquarium.

Bangkok's Open Markets:

Khaosan Road, Banglamphu
Backpacker central has a lot of market-style stalls selling all sorts from beaded necklaces to wooden elephants, to weapons that would frighten a Ninja. In spite of this being the budget traveller's haven, the prices are not necessarily the cheapest in town. Trok Mayom, a small alleyway running parallel to Khaosan is a great place for custom leather crafts for a personalised wallet embossed with your name, or saddlebags for your Harley back home, or anything else your fertile imagination can dream up.

Chatuchak Weekend Market
This massive market, at the end of the northern Skytrain line of Morchit Station, has everything you ever imagined. The creativity of the whole country is distilled here. Leatherwork, lamps, curios, sculptures, furniture, Japanese action figurines - name it and you'll find it here. Such is its fame that you have to bargain hard to get a good price.

Chatuchak is only open on Saturday and Sunday (many of the vendors have regular jobs during the week), it can get pretty hot and crowded here, so pace yourself and don't expect to cover the whole place. To make the most of it, pick up a copy of the Nancy Chandler Shopping Map to Bangkok, which lists off all the sections of the market and what you can expect to find there.

Suan Lum Night Bazaar
This market is similar to Chatuchak (see above), but with less variety as it is still quite new. Nonetheless, it has a wide range of stuff, is conveniently located near the Sala Daeng Skytrain Station, and has a more open and comfortable design, plus a big beer and food garden with entertainment. Opens in the late afternoon, and closes at about 11 pm.

Patpong
Tucked in on the main road of the city's most famous red-light district, this market has mostly handicrafts and knockoffs in the way of t-shirts, watches, binoculars (not that you need them on this road), luggage, DVDs and more. A novel place to shop and very popular with tourists, but the vendors pitch their prices very high here, so bargain hard -- though the vendors are pretty hard to bend here. If you can't get what you want, clear the way for some other mug -- there are plenty behind you.

Sukhumvit Road
Along the main hotel strip of Sukhumvit Road from soi 11 to soi 21 are countless street stalls (more sparse in the daytime). On sale here are similar items to Patpong (see above), and the prices tend to be a bit more reasonable. A good place to get T-shirts with funny slogans on them.

Chinatown
Around the intersections of Siphon Han and Phahurat roads in Chinatown you'll find a bizarre range of shopping opportunities. It's a joy to poke around in the daytime and see what you can find. Guns, musical equipment, bicycle shops, and just about anything else that can be sold appear in groups of three to ten shops carrying the same items, ensuring you can get the best price going. Nearby are of course loads of Chinese restaurants (most with excellent and cheap seafood). A great way to spend an idle day of discovery.

Married to the job

Married to the job

  • Published: 28/01/2010 at 12:00 AM
  • Newspaper section: Horizons

The undivided attention he has always given to his duties has opened windows of opportunity for Benjaphon Angsaengitham, allowing him to rise rapidly through the ranks of the hotel industry. He started out as an accountant and now, at the relatively tender age of 45, he is general manager of Asara Villa & Suites, a stylish, high-end resort in Hua Hin.

Benjaphon Angsaengitham’s dedication to his first love has paid dividends.

A member of the team which opened this resort in 2007, Benjaphon was appointed as GM six months ago. But this amiable man, who's a native of Phuket, is most candid about the humble nature of his origins.

"I come from a poor family and so I've had to slog for everything I've ever achieved in life.

"My mother taught me to always give more than what was expected of me. She used to tell me that if someone is paying you 10 baht for a job, you should put in 12 baht's worth of effort! And that has become my philosophy. I've never been picky about work; I do whatever is given to me. So, in addition to my regular duties as GM, I spend a large amount of my time attending to sales and marketing.

"And the room-occupancy rate has risen since I got directly involved in sales. As the head of the team, I have to set a good example."

Seeing Asara grow from being a relatively unknown destination to its current status has been a most rewarding experience, Benjaphon says, adding that the beachfront resort now caters to both the leisure-travel and MICE (meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions) markets.

How has Asara been different from the other places you've worked for?

I feel very much at home at Asara largely because its owner, Khun Nusara [Assakul] Banyatpiyaphod, has thrown her full weight behind me. So I'm able to manage the property to the best of my ability. Whenever she asks about my work, she often phrases it like this: 'So, Ben, how is everything at your resort?' She doesn't refer to it as her resort, which makes me feel appreciated and gives me a good feeling about managing the property. She trusts my judgement and doesn't meddle in my supervision of the day-to-day chores. Getting such undivided support from one's superior really is an enormous help.

What have been the biggest challenges for you, so far?

There haven't been any major ones yet. With two decades of operational experience under my belt I'm a pretty seasoned hotelier, so I have a tendency to face challenges head on. And whenever I encounter any sort of crisis in my life, I always try to find some light at the end of the tunnel.

Managing a luxury resort does mean addressing a slew of details on a daily basis. What works in my favour is the fact that I'm a details person and I always work with my heart. I believe that there's a solution to be found for every problem. I've done a fair bit of work fine-tuning the skills of my staff to get them up to standard and they're now being taught to multi-task.

How did Asara manage to weather the global economic downturn last year?

Relatively well, actually! We had a pretty consistent flow of local guests. We responded to the economic crisis by adjusting our prices to offer our guests some value-for-money packages. And due to the premium nature of our product we didn't find it necessary to drop our prices to shockingly low levels! We were able to fill our rooms by offering various perks and upgrades, while keeping our prices at almost the same level as before. As travellers, in general, are becoming more frugal with their money, working on tighter budgets, there's an increasing tendency for them to book over the internet at the last minute in the hopes of getting a lower rate. The downside to this, of course, is that they mightn't be able to get the first room of their choice.

What sort of feedback have you been getting from overseas travel agents?

Travel agents are keen to promote Asara because they know that we can host seminars and conferences as well as offering guests a relaxing time at our pool villas and suites. Our executive meeting hall can accommodate up to 70 and is equipped with the latest technology. We also have Kampu by Choice, a fine-dining option and Thai bistro, in addition to a spa and fitness centre.

Last year we came first in the gold class architecture and land-use-planning category of an award sponsored by the Pacific Coast Builders Conference in Western Building Show and Builders magazine.

Have you deteced any concern among potential guests of yours about political instability in Thailand?

There is some concern, yes, since the international media has been reporting on the red- and yellow-shirt movements since all the unrest began. As a Thai national, I felt so ashamed when I was asked during a roadshow we did in Dubai, "when are you Thais going to stop fighting?' I tried to deflect the question by pointing out that Hua Hin has always been a peaceful place and that it is far from the locations of all those demonstrations that people were seeing on their TV screens. I do hope that both sides will be able to settle their differences as soon as possible so that our country can start mending its tattered image overseas.

What plans do you have for Asara?

Since I love plants so much, I'd like to compile a book on the various species that grow on our 22-rai plot. There's also a possibility of extending the property and building a few more villa to accommodate guests during the peak season.

Any advice for up-and-coming hoteliers?

Persevere and be dedicated and passionate about your job. Working in a hotel is no bed of roses; in fact, it's like being married to your job!

Meet Chai, a security guard in the northern town of Nan, and Namtaan (Sugar), his best friend. The pair have been inseparable ever since the day that Chai came across an injured stray puppy lying on the footpath.

It had been hit by a motorcyclist who had callously driven away after the collision. So Chai stepped in. But since there was no one to look after the dog at home, he began bringing it to work with him, where the mutt soon got into the good books of Chai's employer by helping to foil an attempted robbery.

The enchanting island atmosphere makes its own contribution to the pleasures of a spa treatment on Koh Samed

Coming home to Thailand every year for the festive season gives me an opportunity to check out promising resort destinations, and this year, I followed the advice of an old school friend to visit Koh Samed, an island off the east coast of Rayong province.

The Sunset massage is designed to stimulate natural energy while you’re immersed in the island’s tranquillity.

In the past, Samed was a weekend getaway for the young crowd and backpackers from Bangkok and nearby provinces. Today, the island is fast becoming a popular destination for overseas visitors due to its natural surroundings, clear sea and white, sandy beaches - and in Samed I was to discover some of the most beautiful beaches I'd ever seen in Thailand.

The island is about 220 kilometres from Bangkok, a two-hour's drive on the good Bang Na-Chon Buri highway to Rayong. From Rayong's Ban Phe pier, there are shuttle boats to take you on the 15-minute sea crossing to the island.

Samed has a range of accommodation to suit all pockets, from five-star resorts to villas, budget bungalows and thatched huts. The Samed Resorts Group is the biggest single operator on the island with six properties - Paradee, Le Vimarn, Ao Prao Resort, Sai Kaew Beach Resort, Samed Club and the latest, Mook Samed, a private fishing village of teak houses built on stilts in Noi Na Bay, a stone's throw from the beach.

Natural, fresh ingredients are used for facial masks.

There are loads of activities for visitors including island-hopping, open-sea kayaking, snorkelling, scuba-diving, parasailing and all the water sports you can think of. The island also boasts a wide variety of restaurants, with tasty local seafood as the highlight. But I found out that the way to fully enjoy Samed was to simply relax on one of the glorious beaches, spoil myself at a spa resort and enjoy the local food while watching the holiday world pass by.

My island spa trek this time was at the small, luxury Paradee resort on a neck of land between the east- and west-facing beaches of secluded Ao Kiew at the southern tip of the island. The location is important as it plays a significant part in the treatment I chose.

Paradee Spa's concept is centred on the age-old Thai therapeutic elements or thad. These are Earth, Water, Wind and Fire, and it is believed that all things possess one or a combination of these four elements. When the thad become unbalanced, ailments occur. Fever and restlessness are believed to indicate an excess of Fire in the body, while chills are symptoms of an imbalance in Water and Wind. To live well and to be in harmony with the one's surrounding, all the elements should function in equilibrium.

A treatment room for couples at Paradee Spa on Koh Samed.

The spa has blended this four-elements concept and the modern science of wellness in all of its treatments, like the Swedish and oil massages, head, shoulder and foot massages, traditional Thai massage, and its signature treatments, Sunrise and Sunset.

The spa also incorporates the four elements in the design of its four double treatment rooms. Each room has its own outdoor bathtub, rain shower and relaxation area. It has also branded its own rose and jasmine-based essential oil for use in the spa.

According to the spa manager, the Sunrise massage on the fine white sand of Ao Kiew Nok is designed to enhance blood circulation, improve the skin texture with a vitamin D rub to strengthen the bones. It involves a foot soak and foot scrub, Thai massage and facial mask, and it's best if it's done in the morning hours.

I decided on the 70-minute Sunset massage, though, as the Sunrise might be a bit too early for night owls like me. The spa manager explained that it is designed to balance the mind and body and also comfort the eyes, and it includes back, head and shoulder massage and finishes with a foot massage.

The outdoor reception where you can relax after the treatment.

My Sunset ritual took place on the fringe of a private cove, Ao Kiew Nai. The massage table stood on a wooden platform strategically positioned between the rocks, with many small candles and torches lighting the setting. By now, the sun's rays had relented and turned into mere ambiance. The sound of the gentle waves lapping against the beach accompanied sky's transformation from gold to violet and navy blue, painting a captivating landscape.

It began with my feet being rinsed and lathered with scented soap and rose petal water. On the massage table in the fresh breeze, my therapist started her work using a combination of oil and traditional Thai massages and utilising a blend of finger, forearm, elbow and hand techniques.

The finger pressure point was applied to the muscles along the spine progressing from the lower back to the nape of the neck. Next, lightly scented oil was poured on and, using her forearm like a rolling pin, my therapist kneaded the back muscles from the hip up to the shoulder. Near the top of the neck, she rolled her arm and used her elbow to deliver a pressure point to the trapezoid muscle. She repeated this several times, causing a sensation of warmth to spread along my skin fanned by the cool sea breeze.

The massage graduated to the arms, the shoulders and the hands. The shoulder joints and the arms were slightly exercised and stretched, and the therapist stimulated the pressure points and massaged the palms of my hands. My legs were accorded the same treatment as the arms and back, and then I was moved into a seated position for the traditional Thai-style scalp massage relieving pressure points on the head.

The Sunset massage is designed to stimulate natural energy while you're immersed in the island's tranquility. The soft, salty scent of the sea at sunset and the sound of the waves replace the floral or herb aromas and pre-recorded music commonly used in enclosed facility. Following the assortment of massage techniques, I felt completely relaxed, serene and satisfied.

The friendly and knowledgeable team of staff and therapists added another layer of luxury to the services at Paradee, and they are surely one of the reasons why visitors return to Samed year after year. Paradee Spa was also received the "Award of Excellent - Destination Spa" - Thailand Tourism Awards 2008 by the TAT.

The Center for Ornamental Plants: A Floral Feast For The Eyes

The Center for Ornamental Plants: A Floral Feast For The Eyes
UPDATE : 22 January 2010

Kinnareemas

Whether you're aiming to develop an existing garden, or turn an unused area into a space devoted to the cultivation of plants, you really ought to pay a visit to Bangrak Noi, a subdistrict of Nonthaburi province's Mueang district, which is located just a few kilometers north of Bangkok.

This area plays host to a plant market called the Center for Ornamental Plants at Soi Chang, which offers a wide variety of ornamental plants for sale. It's an ideal location in which to browse and locate that 'perfect' plant to meet your individual needs.

The market features up to 90 outlets, providing a range of horticultural services, including nursery facilities and landscape design services, while some stores sell sculptures, ceramic dolls, along with other decorative items, including earthenware pots and other containers used for cultivating or storing plants.

A diverse display
Among the wide variety of plants for sale at the market are ornamental and perennial plants, along with those commonly used for landscaping. Several stores manage to draw the attention of shoppers by displaying a number of tiny plant species that feature extremely colorful flora, such as Dreamland, Marigold, Vitesse, Gerbera, and Gazania, which is available in several different colors.

Ferns are another popular form of plant among horticulturists. While they neither bloom nor produce any seeds, the impressive shape and form of their leaves is what leads many gardeners to save a special spot for ferns. Indeed, many store operators dedicate their display areas to various kinds of fern. Some ferns are imported, and the most popular source countries for these plants are Australia and Indonesia.

Bought for luck
If you're fortunate enough to have a spacious garden, you may be able to consider planting some trees. Several stores offer varieties that are considered to be auspicious among Thai people, such as the Golden Shower Tree, the Indian Coral Tree, Golden Bamboo, Tembura, Siamese Rosewood and Jackfruit. Some of these stores also stock several tall varieties that feature scented flowers when they bloom, such as Ylang-Ylang, Cork, Bhandari and White Meranti.

Hemps and sedges, known as wan in Thai, feature leaves that appear 'stained' or 'blemished'. These varieties are also considered to be auspicious, according to Thai culture.

Some of these plants bloom, while others don't. Most of these varieties also feature names that are loaded with the promise of good fortune or prosperity. For example, Mahachoke means 'great luck', Kwak Thongkam 'gold beckoning', Phya Changpuek 'the Great White Elephant', and Mahaniyom 'to be appeciated'.

Community enterprise
Most of the stores and stalls at The Center for Ornamental Plants at Soi Chang are run by horticulturists and landscape gardeners. Many had previously made a living by growing fruit in nearby orchards. However, following heavy floods in 1995, which were among the worst ever to hit Nonthaburi, many of the growers faced an uncertain future as many of their trees were destroyed. At that point they decided to turn to the horticulture business as a form of diversification and to help them make ends meet.

The Center for Ornamental Plants at Soi Chang opens daily from 8 am-6 pm.

For further information, call the Public Relations Department of Nonthaburi’s Muang district on Tel: +66 (0)86 522 3682.

Transport connections:
Car: Soi Chang is off Rattanathibej Road a few meters before it joins with Rachapruek Road.

Bus: Regular (non-air conditioned) bus numbers 134, 388, 203 and 13, all run along Rattanathibej Road.

BANGKOK (AFP) - Thai police are hunting for three teenagers suspected of stabbing a German man to death on a popular resort island, police said Thursday.

Wolf Dieter Eugen Kebelheim, 66, died in hospital after he was attacked on Wednesday evening on the southern island of Phuket, where he lived with his Thai wife, said Lieutenant-Colonel Anukul Nooket.

Witnesses saw the German man quarrelling with three local teenagers on motorcycles after they cut in front of his pick-up truck, Anukul said. The youngsters were then seen stabbing him twice, in his torso and neck, he added.

While Thailand bills itself as the "Land of Smiles" for expats and tourists, incidents of foreigners falling prey to violence occur regularly.

January 28, 2010
LYON, France (AFP) - Police have seized 20 million counterfeit or illegal medical products in cross-border operations in South East Asia, arrested 30 people and closed down more than 100 pharmacies and illicit drug outlets, Interpol said Wednesday.

The operation, dubbed Operation Storm II, was carried out in eight countries -- Cambodia, China, Indonesia, Laos, Myanmar, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam -- between July and November last year under the framework of the World Health Organization’s International Medical Products Anti-counterfeiting Task Force.

The seized products included antibiotics, anti-malarial and birth control medicines, anti-tetanus serums, aspirin and erectile dysfunction drugs.

Twelve million of them were fake and the best before date of eight million had either lapsed or the medical drugs had been otherwise altered.

Interpol's Secretary General Ronald Noble said a Storm network would be set up in South East Asia to organise and improve crackdowns on counterfeit products.

"This collaborative response is all the more important when globalization and modern technology mean that the methods of producing and distributing counterfeit medicines cut across borders and are developing and increasing, thereby posing an increased threat to people's health and lives."

January 28, 2010
VANCOUVER (Reuters) - Brian McKeever became the first athlete to gain selection for a Winter Olympics and a Paralympics in the same year when he was included in a strong Canadian cross country team for next month's Vancouver Games.

McKeever, who suffers from Stargardt's disease and is legally blind, effectively booked his place on the 11-member squad by winning an able-bodied 50-km race in Canmore, Alberta last month.

The 30-year-old Canmore skier, who will also represent his country at the Paralympic Winter Games in March, was delighted with his double selection.

"It's important for people to know the Paralympics is as high as it gets," McKeever said in a statement released by Cross Country Canada on Friday.

"It is the Olympic Games for people with physical disabilities and I hope people will realize through my story the gap is not that big. Just because somebody has a disability doesn't mean they are not training hard or are extremely fit.

"I think the Paralympics is a great product. We have something worth watching and I hope my story will bring more attention to that."

McKeever, who because of macular degeneration has only 10 percent vision which is limited to peripheral, has won seven Paralympic medals alongside his brother Robin who acts as his guide.

At the Vancouver Games, however, McKeever will have to race alone.

OLYMPIC MEDALLISTS

Ten other skiers were named on the Canadian team on Friday, including former Olympic medalists Chandra Crawford and

Sara Renner and World Cup veterans Devon Kershaw, George Grey and Ivan Babikov.

Crawford, 26, won gold in the individual sprint at the 2006 Turin Games although she will have to contend with the classical format in Vancouver.

All-rounder Kershaw, a winner of three World Cup medals, spearheads a six-member men's team widely regarded as the strongest fielded by Canada.

Distance specialist Babikov, who won a gold medal in the final stage of last year's Tour de Ski, raced for Russia at the 2006 Olympics before becoming a Canadian citizen in 2008.

Grey landed a bronze medal in the team sprint at last year's World Cup at Whistler Olympic Park and, like Babikov, will be appearing at his second Winter Games.

"We have seen through the development of our men's program that our guys are now racing to be among the best in the world," Cross Country Canada high-performance director Tom Holland said.

"This is truly one of the most talented Olympic Teams Canada has ever assembled."

In addition to the Olympic gold and silver medals won by Crawford and Renner at the 2006 Games, Canada's squad includes seven athletes with a combined total of 15 World Cup medals.
