The Ayurvedic principles involved in the ancient Hindu art of medicine and prolonging life, suggest that a body’s quintessence, or most concentrated essence, influences an individual’s personality and wellness. Traditional Thai medicine, which is partly based upon Ayurvedic concepts, calculates by use of a person’s birth date their quintessence, allowing them to prescribe the most appropriate medicine, treatment, or dietary recommendations. Fun Filled Format Located just a few kilometers outside Bangkok’s city limits in Nakhon Pathom province’s Sam Phran district, the Rose Garden Riverside recently played host to a workshop aimed at introducing the concept to a wider audience. Among the activities taking place was a fun, learning-based activity that included a demonstration of how to produce a special personalized herbal inhaler. This event was held at Rose Garden Riverside’s Rose Pavilion. The workshop featured two distinct processes. Firstly, your quintessence is analyzed by a traditional practitioner of Thai medicine. This makes reference to the elements air, fire, earth (soil) and water and is used in tandem with your date of birth. Creative Combinations The second part of the process involves producing the personalized herbal inhaler based on the results of the analysis. An instructor will reveal which herbs or other ingredients are best suited to your individual quintessence assessment. If your quintessence is defined as soil or water, you will be given a spoonful of cardamom, which you will need to grind with a small pestle and mortar. If your quintessence is defined as air, kaffir lime peel is seen as the best option, whereas fire works best with nutmeg, according to the experts. A cup of potpourri, which includes dried flowers and herbs, including globe amaranth, marigold, pandan leaves and rose is placed on top of the cloth. The cloth is then wrapped around the cup, although you will have to follow the instructor’s lead, step-by-step, during this part of the process. The entire session will take about 30-40 minutes, depending on the pace you can maintain. Your personalized inhaler is then ready to be hung around your neck so you can breath in the aroma. You’ll find it can refresh and reinvigorate your senses, calm your nerves and alleviate nasal congestion, nausea and indigo. It’s also possible to hang the inhaler in a smaller area, such as a small room, or even a car. The aroma should last for up to several days. This weekend workshop was certainly great value at just 200 baht (US$6.18) per person. Participants get to learn about the characteristics that define quintessence, while also receiving a chart listing food options deemed most appropriate given their personal characteristics.
