Pattawikorn Market: 'Nearly New' Bargains Up For Grabs | |||
UPDATE : 31 May 2010 | |||
Pattawikorn Market was established 10 years ago by the management team at Pattawikorn Village. Located off Navamin Road, the market is held on a piece of land in front of the entrance to the village and usually boasts more than 500 stalls. Vendors are attracted to the market since it attracts lots of shoppers, while the daily fee for stallholders is extremely reasonable at just 50 baht (US$1.53). The market opens daily from about 2 pm until late in the evening. Over recent years, it has become particularly well known as a form of flea market since many vendors choose to sell second-hand or 'nearly new' items, including various kinds of bric-a-brac. The market is popular for several reasons, including the fact that there's plenty of space and due to the wide variety of goods for sale, such as books, clothes, furniture, gadgets, ornaments and other kinds of decorative items suitable for the home. In general, there tends to be a larger number of stallholders on the weekend. I visited the market on a Friday evening and although it was only about 6 pm when I arrived, it was already extremely crowded. Interestingly, there seemed to be more male than female shoppers and I'm guessing that this might be due to so many stalls selling IT or IT-related goods. Seeing lots of old computer and video games for sale certainly took me back to my youth, so I'm not surprised the market is so popular among kids. Bargains Galore Among all the secondhand goods for sale are lots of electrical appliances, furniture and home furnishings, including cushions, sofas and tables and chairs. Prices tend to be pretty realistic so canny shoppers are sure to be able to unearth a bargain or two. I stumbled upon an impressive painting of a lighthouse and sailboat and the only reason I didn't buy it was its enormity, which would have made it difficult to transport it to my residence. However, I eventually did purchase a beautiful old candle holder made from bronze from a stall specializing in furniture for just 150 baht. While many people tend to visit home improvement outlets when it comes to shopping for items for the home, I would recommend they first pay a visit to Pattawikorn Market instead, as it's possible to find highly original and often more inspiring items at a fraction of the prices charged at high street stores. So, whether you're looking to brighten up your home, or liven up your wardrobe, consider paying a visit to Pattawikorn Market as you'll certainly be spoiled for choice. Transport Connections: Bus: Lots of buses pass in front of the market, including numbers 60, 71, 95, 156, 501, 512 and 520. Car: Firstly, head to the Bangkapi Interesection and then turn left into Navamin Road (formerly known as Sukhapiban 1). Continue driving for about three kilometers until the road intersects with Kaset-Navamin Road. Continue straight ahead and get into the right-hand lane once you see a branch of Carrefour on your left. Take the next U-turn and continue driving for a few hundred meters until you come to Pattawikorn Market, which you will also see on your left. |
