The MegaCity Vehicle project has been officially revealed with the first ones ready to hit the showroom in 2013

The MegaCity Vehicle project has been officially revealed with the first ones ready to hit the showroom in 2013.

BMW’s illustration of MCV reveals a very efficient package.

- Ah, so BMW believes the future is electric...

BMW says vehicle emissions in the US, Europe and Japan are envisioned to drop by 30% in 2020 when compared to 2008. It also cites a UN report that 60% of the world's population will live in big cities in 2030, 70% by 2050.

That is why BMW is moving ahead with its MegaCity Vehicle project with the first ones ready to hit the showroom in 2013 under a new sub-brand. Electrified drivetrains will be the key ingredient of MCV.

- Is this pic for real?

What you see on this page is an official illustration of MCV handed out by BMW. It previews a very efficient package with compact dimensions and lightweight body.

Dubbed "project i" internally, BMW's MCV started taking shape three years ago and is said to feature a single construction of the battery, drive system and structural and crash functions within the chassis.

- And what kind of power can we expect?

As stated in the sidebar to this story, MCV highlights an electric drivetrain with a single-speed transmission placed in the rear, thus driving the rear wheels.

The reason why BMW thinks one-speed gearbox is enough is that a 150kph top speed should be ample for real-world use. Driving faster than that would simply go against the concept of efficiency - it would just drain more power.

Technically speaking, though, BMW says it can engineer MCV to go faster. But that would require more forward gears translating into a bigger and heavier package. As said earlier, BMW stresses lightweight and compact design for MCV.

- How far can the car go on one charge?

BMW hasn't disclosed any figures for MCV yet, although its two current prototypes - the Mini E and Concept E - are capable of running up to 150 to 160 kilometres on a single charge. And with MCV obviously being lighter in weight than these two, it could go over 200km.

BMW has learned from cars it leased that customers usually recharged their cars at home, despite the availability of charging points in selected areas of major cities.

BMW said MCV will also highlight its Connected Drive technology in which mobile phone-based functions point to battery status and charging points.

- And what if I need to drive more than 200km?

BMW says it is looking at a range-extender system, similar to the plug-in hybrids in the Toyota Prius and Chevrolet Volt. In simpler terms, a small conventional petrol/diesel engine acts as a back-up when electricity runs out.

- Hmm... so it's not totally CO2-free...

Well, maybe in the initial stages when the electricity grid isn't ideally spread out yet. But that's the path, as many other car manufacturers believe, the electrification of vehicles.

In fact, BMW has made it a point that MCV also marks a rethink on how cars would be made. There would be more component recycling than ever, and the production should be simpler, flexible and use less energy. So start thinking of factories roofed with solar panels...

- Will MCV be fun to drive like other Bee-ems?

BMW thinks so. With so much of torque naturally available from electric engines, drivers would be able to enjoy lots of grunt right from standstill. It is certainly poised to become a new dimension in driving, as Motoring learned with the Mini E.

And coupled with a rear-drive system (drifters rejoice), the MCV could still be one of those fun-to-drive Bimmers. Let's see whether it would have BMW's much-touted 50:50 weight balance by 2013.

Inside MCV

Body

To offset the 250-350kg rise in weight that is typical of cars with electric drivetrains, BMW is turning to a passenger cell made from carbon claimed to be 50% lighter than steel; aluminium, the Germans say, only helps bring is down by 30%.

BMW's outside partner in developing such a body is SGL Automotive Carbon Fibers.

Drivetrain

A 100kW (136hp) electric system drives the rear wheels in the BMW fashion.

A one-speed automatic transmission ensures the car can go to a maximum speed of 150kph.

BMW says when the throttle is lifted off, the car can slow down and, at the same time, regenerate energy.

Battery

Lithium-ion batteries will store energy better than old-fashioned nickel-metal hydride type.

Although batteries have limited life in automotive use, BMW says they can continue to be of use in other applications that don't require as much power.

Batteries come from SB LiMotive Power Cell.

The future's lab

The future's lab

BMW is shifting its vehicle-testing programme from the road onto the testbed, although the days of the automotive paparazzi aren't over yet

  • Published: 28/05/2010 at 12:00 AM

BMW has opened a new vehicle-testing facility in Munich, Germany, aiming to reduce costs and speed up development time of new products in the pipeline.

With an investment of 130m (about B5.6bn), BMW also hopes to reinforce its position as a leading engineering firm with its so-called Environmental Technology Centre (ETC).

Highlights of the closed-room testing facility include three wind tunnels that can replicate various climate conditions all-year round. And with the help of digital imaging, times for vehicle assessment can be cut from five hours to as little as 5-10 minutes.

BMW hasn't revealed any cost-saving figures as the facility is still in its initial stages but it did maintain that any concrete results would only emerge after two years.

"All we can say is that it is the future," stressed one head engineer. "The management board was convinced [when we presented the project]."

Although many other car manufacturers already do a lot of vehicle-testing in laboratories, BMW says its aero tunnels are so sophisticated that none of our competitors can match.

Cars with up to 700hp can be tested.

The test chambers are capable of imitating temperatures between -30C to 35C and simulating environmental factors like snow, rain and sun. This allows engineers to conduct tests anytime of the year.

Conventional methods employed today include testing on selected roads and different times of the year ranging from the ultra-cold Arctic region to baking hot temperatures in the Dubai desert. These are said to be far more costly than the new method envisaged at ETC.

BMW says such testing is important to evaluate a car's reliability, especially for the heating/cooling system, engine calibration and safety features.

There is also a wind tunnel that can simulate conditions at altitudes as high as 4,200 metres. This is particularly important for testing engines with turbocharged technologies which have taken prominence over naturally-aspirated motors due to stricter emission standards.

Simulation of sunshine of up to 45%.

BMW has already turned to turbo engines for many of its applications, including the Mini brand. Existing turbo engines include inline-six and V8 petrol, as well as inline-four and inline-six diesel.

While there's a turbo four-pot petrol in the Mini, BMW sources have confirmed with Motoring that a longitudinal variation is being prepared for BMW's rear- and four-wheel drive models like the 1, 3 and 5-series, plus the X1 and X3.

"Actually, [this new facility] is also aimed at attracting other makers who do not have a facility of their own," admits one insider. "This may come in the form of what BMW and PSA (makers of Peugeot and Citroen) did with the 1.6-litre turbo-petrol engine."

So far the PSA Group has relied on BMW's expertise on engine development, while the Germans took advantage of the French's parts purchasing clout.

It is now believed that BMW wants to seek more volume for its six-cylinder engine development, which could come in the form of another partnership with an outside brand.

Hybrid and electric powertrains will also become crucial in the future, and BMW already has agreements with General Motors (full petrol/electric hybrid) and arch-rival Mercedes-Benz (mild petrol/electric hybrid).

Despite the attractive equipment of BMW's ETC facility, real-world testing is still required due to several constraints. Simulating sandy or dusty conditions presents a problem to the testing equipment, according to one engineer.

Real-world testing could become a thing of the past.

As well, chassis tuning - a specialty of BMW - needs to be carried out in real-world conditions so that cars can be of most relevance to buyers, although that could change in the future.

"It could be possible in the future," said the engineer. "It [The ETC] has opened up many new ideas for us and could inspire more tasks [to be undertaken at ETC]."

Moreover, BMW stresses the importance of testing in both the lab (for objective results) and on public roads (subjective). It wants to ensure that different customers around the world would be getting the products they want.

An interesting part of ETC is acoustics lightweight design whereby vehicles are tuned artificially to satisfy varying demands of consumers.

For instance, the diesel drone of a 6-series coupe' could be heavily suppressed in order to allow a sporty note to come out from the car's audio speakers instead.

Although sound-engineering is not new, BMW is now experimenting with a multi-level of sound patterns for Mini.

ETC: AT A GLANCE

- BMW has invested 130m (about B5.6bn) into the new testing facility whose highlight is three advanced wind tunnels for testing both cars and motorcycles.

- The test chambers have rollers and body clamps that can accommodate front, rear and four-wheel drive cars of speeds up to 130kph. Tests for emission and fuel consumption can be taken at up to 200kph.

- Simulated conditions include temperatures of between -30C to 35C, altitude of -200 to 4,200m. Natural forces that can be replicated include snow, rain and 45% of sunlight.

- Digital imaging can help reduce vehicle evaluation from 5hr down to 5-10min. Duration of testing falls from 120min down to 75min. Between 3-10 cars can be tested each day.

BMW and Mercedes-Benz also have petrol/electric tech. Unfortunately, right-hand-drive cars are not available yet.

BMW 7 ActiveHybrid

Power: 465hp/700Nm 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8

Gearbox: eight-speed automatic

Battery: lithium-ion

0-100kph/Top speed: 4.9sec/250kph

Economy/CO2 emissions: 10.6kpl/219g/km

Flagship saloon uses a mild hybrid system, unlike the Lexus LS600h which uses a full hybrid variation allowing for short-distance pure electric driving. However, the 7-series hybrid scores with an impressive balance between performance and fuel economy - substantially quicker than the LS600h yet as frugal.

Mercedes-Benz S400 Hybrid

Power: 299hp/385Nm 3.5-litre V6

Gearbox: seven-speed automatic

Battery: lithium-ion

0-100kph/Top speed: 7.2sec/250kph

Economy/CO2 emissions: 12.7kpl/186g/km

Like the 7-series, the S-class comes with a mild hybrid but focuses more on economy rather than performance. The figures explain it all - the S400 Hybrid is slower than both 7 ActiveHybrid and LS600h but significantly more economical on fuel.
