Darlyn "Din" Sophonpanich, the owner of The Adjective, a thriving multi-brand clothing and accessories shop at CentralWorld, was not born to be a stylist. And yet, if the recently opened branch at Siam Paragon is any indication, she has a passion for fashion to run this business happily.
Having a very similar appearance to her mother, Khunying Chodchoy Sophonpanich, Darlyn is also self-confident, cheerful and outgoing. She sat down with 'Muse' to share the terms and "adjectives" that relate to her fashionable shop.
Friends Friends are my inspiration. Previously, I always bought their favourite brands whenever I was abroad and that became the first idea for this shop. I want to provide goods they like to wear so they don’t have to go abroad to shop. Therefore, lots of my customers are my friends or friends of theirs. It seems like my shop is known by word of mouth.
Trends Fashion magazines are one method that I use to find out new brands, big hits or how this season is shaping up. My favourites are Vogue and Elle. I never feel that keeping up with trends is my duty. It’s my joy to find something to talk to my customers about, and magazines are a very good source.
Mix and Match ‘Mix and match’ is the concept of The Adjective. For example, jeans can be applied to various styles. You can wear them with shirts to go to work or with T-shirts and accessories to go to night parties. A customer shouldn’t confine him or herself to only one brand. Typically, people look good in many brands. The tip to mixing and matching is that you have to know your shape and be brave to try. If you know what you are, then just be confident. Don’t lose yourself because of what others say
Travelling My boutique is multi-label, so I need to travel to countries around the world including the United States, Sweden, Hong Kong or Japan. These trips give me a chance to broaden my view: What’s in, what’s hot or how are the displays in their shops?
Ambitions Actually, to own a boutique shop has been my aspiration since I was young. Other people may want to own a florist’s or a coffee shop, but I always yearned to have my own clothing shop. Whenever I talked about this dream, everyone would say ‘‘Oh, this is very Din,’’ or ‘‘You are you, absolutely.’’ I don’t like to be a designer or a stylist. What I love is getting itemsmixed and matched and giving advice about dress to others, so this is my dream shop.
Socialising Since I gave birth to The Adjective, I’ve known that I enjoy talking with many people, not only about fashion topics but also about everything flowing around. I feel like I am everybody’s friend. Sometimes I meet old friends by chance, too. They walk into the shop not knowing that I amthe owner!
