While the number of health food stores in Bangkok is gradually increasing, a handy service that delivers organic produce right to your front door is successfully meeting the growing demand for greater convenience among green consumers.
Delivering reliable organic products, Health Me Organic Delivery's convenient service reduces Bangkok residents' reliance on their own vehicles or other forms of transport. Established during the late 1990s, the business initially only had a handful of customers, but it now provides its service to over 300 customers throughout the capital.
Convenience the key Portip Pechporee, the founder of Health Me Organic Delivery (Health Me), says the service responds to the lifestyle needs of Bangkok residents who want to purchase organic food, but don't have the time to make a trip to a health food outlet, which may be located a considerable distance from their homes. Moreover, consumers in search of organic products may not necessarily be able to find everything they want in a single health food store. In that case, they would then be forced to visit more than a single store in order to satisfy their needs, according to Portip.
“The main advantage of our service is that our fresh produce is particularly fresh when compared with goods kept in fridges [in stores] since we get it directly from farmers and deliver it on a daily basis,” Portip says, adding that deliveries are made to Health Me from its suppliers two or three times a week.
Health Me's delivery menu provides edible and hygiene products that are free from chemicals. The edible products are free from chemical residues, preservatives and artificial flavorings, while the hygienic products are free from exposure to foam-enhanced chemicals, artificial colorings and odors, according to Portip.
Edible products include fresh and diary produce, fruit drinks, bread, rice, sesame, soy sauce, honey and cereal bars and other kinds of snacks. Ready-to-eat meals include a variety of salads, ice cream, and a few mushroom-based specialties. Hygiene products include shampoo, conditioners, soap and detergents.
A commitment to quality Portip says that the products on the delivery menu are carefully sourced from small businesses, while fresh produce is sourced from growers in provinces located near Bangkok.
Although almost all the products have not been certified by any standard-issuing body, Portip says she relies on the sincerity of the producers and growers, along with her own observations of the production processes during her regular visits to their farms or factories.
Health Me and its suppliers are members of the Green Market Network, a network of producers, distributors, store owners and consumers, which are health conscious and share the aim of raising awareness among consumers of chemical-free products.
"I'd like to specifically support these growers and producers by supplying their products to consumers, so they can continue to work under conditions that are friendly to the health of their own employees and consumers, as well as being friendly to the environment,” she says.
Saramon Tanyongwetch, 58, who has used Health Me's delivery service for two years, says the service saves her the inconvenience of having to travel to a health food store.
Saramon has sourced organic food ingredients for over 30 years, which she uses to prepare meals for herself and her mother.
"As soon as I heard about Health Me in the media, I immediately rang them to make use of their services," says Saramon, who decided to add chemical-free, non-food products to her shopping list over 10 years ago. Saramon backs Portip's idea of supporting local organic farmers and producers. She trusts the legitimacy of the products to a certain degree and sometimes gives away soap or shampoo to friends in order to try and expand the number of green consumers.
Health Me manages to deliver food and other goods to customers' residences along all major roads throughout Bangkok. The delivery vehicle travels along six circular routes; each operating on a particular day of the week.
As part of Health Me's services, Portip offers regular customers updates by phone to let them know when fresh produce is in stock, as well as providing useful information about new products or relating to the company's delivery services.
Portip welcomes new customers under a certain condition. Customers must order goods totaling at least 300 baht (US$9.29) at least once a week, every week, over a continuous period. This basic condition helps Portip, as well as the growers and producers, to better prepare and manage their businesses.
The delivery vehicle also stops at numerous office buildings in Bangkok since many of Portip's customers are office workers who share an order with colleagues at their place of work in order to meet the minimum requirement.
"People should learn to invest in what they consume and give everyone the chance to consume healthy food and use environmentally-friendly products," Portip says. She adds that many folks only tend to think of healthy products when their health has already begun to deteriorate, which may be too late to have any real benefit.
