The Overstay: A Safe And Sound 'Home From Home' | |||
UPDATE : 4 May 2010 | |||
While wealthier travelers might see the Overstay as being a form of flophouse, budget travelers swear by the value provided by its cool but affordable accommodation options. Located in Thon Buri’s Charansanitwong Road, on the other side of the Chao Phraya River, the Overstay is just a short distance away from Khao San Road. Your journey time (10-30 minutes) to and from Khao San Road will be determined by the volume of traffic and the vehicle you’re using. A bargain base These days, 50 baht (US$1.70) doesn’t usually get you very much - perhaps a burger and fries at McDonald’s? But, you’ll be surprised to discover, this modest sum will in fact get you a dorm bed at the Overstay. There are 10 beds in the dorm area, which is cooled with an industrial-strength fan. Folks staying a little longer may wish to consider the monthly rate for a room (4,000 baht), while travelers short of cash are also catered for and can stay on the roof in a tent or hammock for a modest donation. Carefree days I would generally describe the Overstay as offering nice, affordable accommodation in a genial atmosphere. The majority of guests tend to be young travelers, living their lives like there’s no tomorrow. The Overstay is certainly a unique, alternative place to stay, boasting an unpretentious ambiance thanks in a large part to the spontaneous friendly banter among staff and guests. While the accommodation is reasonable, it’s also fairly Spartan. The Overstay generally has about 15-25 guests at any one time and the majority of travelers report that they feel very much at home during their stay. Although it’s fairly basic accommodation, there is actually no shortage of useful facilities available to guests at the Overstay. It boasts 24-hour Internet Access at the reception, a common room, guest kitchen, as well as Internet and WiFi Internet access in the guest rooms and lobbies. In terms of entertainment, the Overstay has a pool table and an Indie Bar on the ground floor, which regularly hosts exciting nightlife and music events. For further information, call Tel: +66 (0)2 883 4836, or visit http://www.theoverstay.com/. Transport connections: The Overstay is located on Charan Sanitwong Road. Link to map. Bus: Buses 203 and 56 stop in front of the Overstay. From Suvarnabhumi International Airport, it only costs 35 baht on bus 556 (an orange-colored bus), which passes close to Pata Pinklao Shopping Mall. It's easy enough to walk from the mall to Charan Sanitwong Soi 40, which is about 400-500 meters away. When you see a branch of 7-11, walk in the direction of Kasikorn Bank. Keep walking until you spot the canal and the Overstay nearby. |
