JAKARTA (AFP) - Indonesia discovered five tigers that have been raised by a man at home for about 25 years, an official said Friday.
"We found Thursday a pair of adult tiger and three cubs following information we received from locals," forestry ministry spokesman Bintoro told AFP.
"The man is an animal lover that has raised tigers since 1985 in his private house in South Jakarta," he said, adding that the tigers were enclosed in a 49 square-metre (160 square-foot) steel cage in the man's backyard.
"It's an illegal activity as we don't allow an individual to keep the endangered species, unless they run an authorised conservation body," Bintoro said, adding that the man had not been arrested.
Bintoro said he suspected that the big cats were endangered Sumatran tigers, but experts took blood samples to determine their type.
There are fewer than 400 Sumatran tigers left in the wild and their increasing contact with people is a result of habitat loss due to deforestation, according to conservationists.
