Phranakorn 5: Where Tasty Thai Treats Play The Leading Role
UPDATE : 5 February 2010
Located just north of Bangkok in Nonthaburi province, Phranakorn 5 sits right alongside the Chao Phraya River, offering stunning views of Rama V Bridge. Singer and actor Songsit Rungnoppakulsri, who starred in the award winning movie Love of Siam, and a group of his friends decided to open the restaurant in 2005. Since then it has quickly become a popular place to dine thanks to the eatery's extensive range of authentic Thai dishes. Fitting the bill While for many diners, a restaurant is simply somewhere to eat, Phranakorn 5 can offer a whole lot more, providing an ideal setting for a dinner party or similar gathering. Sure, you might be able to organize something similar at home, but when you factor in the additional costs, not only financial but also in terms of the time invested in organizing such a gathering, it would probably prove easier and cheaper to hold such an event at Phranakorn 5. Divine delicacies I began my culinary adventure at Phranakorn 5 with an exotic dish called Namprik Long Rue ('Hot Shrimp Paste With Crispy Pork and Boiled Eggs'), which was simply superb. The crispy pork and boiled eggs complimented the spicy shrimp paste perfectly, while I was impressed by the restaurant's decision to serve it in a small mortar. Served in a little bird's nest-like portion of fried taro, it almost looked too good to eat! It wasn't all eye candy though, since when I did force myself to dig in, the chicken proved to be nice and succulent. The final dish – Yam Ngua ('Thai-Style Spicy Beef Salad') – includes lots of healthful herbs, although it was slightly spicier than I had anticipated. As I approached the end of my meal, I celebrated with a Margarita (200 baht [US$6] per glass). I can say that the drink was both delicious and plenty strong enough for my own personal taste. Phranakorn 5 really is a proper riverside restaurant, featuring 'live' music, but a visit doesn't necessarily need to mean an expensive night out with dishes starting from 60 baht. In this sense, the eatery manages to satisfy my culinary aspirations without hurting my pocketbook. By the time I had recorded my sixth visit, members of staff at the restaurant had begun to recognize me and I think I can safely announce that today I've become more or less a 'regular' here. While Phranakorn 5 opens from 11 am until 1 am, the 'live' music – typically comprising Thai folk or pop music – tends to begin about 9 pm. Phranakorn 5 offers ample parking space out front and you can make a reservation by calling Tel: +66 (0)81 802 2056. Transport connections: Car: From the Kaerai Intersection, turn left toward the ministry of public health. Cross the bridge and continue driving for about another two kilometers. Keep left and then turn left into Piboonsongkram Road. Turn left at the first set of traffic lights (under Rama V Bridge). Keep left and continue straight ahead until you see the restaurant on your left near a U-turn underneath the bridge. |
