Denchai district in the northern province of Phrae is well known among railway users since it's where passengers disembark, providing a gateway to the province's cultural and natural attractions.
A visit to a restaurant in the district called Suan Saithong provides a great deal of insight into local customs and culture, while it serves up a wide variety of authentic northern specialties. You can reach it easily by car or local forms of transport since the restaurant is just a few kilometers from Denchai's commercial center along Highway 101.
An impressive locale Featuring antique teak wood furniture crafted in a vernacular style, the restaurant has a kitchen at the front of the building with a counter where diners can order their food and then pick it up once it's ready.
Behind the kitchen is a huge dining area, including two large teak wood pavilions, which include several cozy corner areas. There's also a patio, featuring a pleasant view of the lush greenery nearby for those who prefer to dine al fresco.
Earthy charms On the ground in the kitchen area are three large clay stoves, which are used for grilling the meat used in local favorites, such as Sai Uaw (northern-style pork sausage with herbs), Moo Yor (northern-style sausage wrapped in banana leaves), Nam (preserved pork and crispy pork skin wrapped in banana leaves), along with northern-style grilled pork chops.
The use of charcoal to fire the clay stoves gives these items a lovely sweet aroma. The Sai Uaw here is certainly tasty, featuring a hint of garlic and lemon grass. Indeed, since the restaurant's establishment 10 years ago, this has become its signature dish.
Distinctively northern Other mouth-watering dishes of renown available at Suan Saithong include Kaeng Om, a pork soup featuring a variety of herbs, along with Kaeng Kae, a soup featuring home-reared chicken and locally sourced vegetables. These dishes also feature preserved shrimp paste, which give them a particularly local flavor.
The restaurant also offers Somtam (spicy papaya salad), Larb Moo (a spicy pork salad), and Nam Prik Noom ('young' chili paste), along with Hor Mok, another local favorite that features grilled pork mixed with curry paste, wrapped in banana leaves.
Since these are main dishes, they are presented in the traditional way, which includes a serving of sticky rice. The average price of dishes at the eatery range from about 30-70 baht (US$1-2).
Suan Saithong opens from Tuesday through Sunday from 8 am to 6 pm. For further information, call Tel: +66 (0)54 613 458.
